Wood Turning & Carving Calculators

Calculate safe lathe speeds, bowl and spindle blank sizes, segmented ring angles, and carving gouge choices - turn and carve safely, without wasted stock.

Wood Turning & Carving Calculators

Turning is the one part of woodworking where the wrong number is dangerous, not just wasteful. A blank spinning too fast can leave the lathe and hit you. These calculators set safe speeds and the right blank sizes, so the work stays on the lathe and your stock isn't wasted.

Safe lathe speed

Lathe speed comes down to one idea: the edge of a big blank travels much faster than a small one at the same RPM. So diameter goes up, RPM comes down. A 12-inch bowl blank is roughed around 500 to 700 RPM. A small spindle - a pen or a tool handle - can safely run past 2,000. Many turners keep a simple ceiling in mind: if a bowl blank could come off, stay near 1,000 RPM until it's balanced. Our turning speed calculator sets the RPM range from your blank diameter, so you have a safe upper limit before you switch on.

Bowl, spindle, and segmented blanks

Blank sizing decides how much stock you use and how much you waste. Work out bowl blank diameter and depth from the finished piece. Size spindle blanks and set lathe center height. Estimate blank weight by species before you mount something heavy. Segmented turning is its own math - our segmented calculator works out the segment angle, ring diameter, and piece count for any number of segments, so the rings glue up true.

Carving layout

Carving is less about speed and more about the right tool and depth. Pick the gouge sweep and width to match the cut. Set blank dimensions and depth for a relief carving. Each tool works from your project size, so you start with material that fits the piece instead of trimming later.

Safety note: always start a new blank at low speed and stand out of the line of fire until it runs true and balanced. Check the wood for splits, checks, and cracks first, and never exceed your lathe's rated speed for the blank size.
